The biggest mistake people make when colouring their images is only seeing one tone. As a result, the image looks monochrome and flesh tones appear too brown or too pink. Colours such as green, blue and red aren’t obvious when you look at people, but they are there. I like to exaggerate them slightly for artistic effect, similar to canvas painters and fantasy artists. If you examine such work closely, you will see what I mean. As a general guide, apply tints of blue or grey to dark areas and shadows. Apply tints of red to cheeks, lips and to areas likely to catch the sun or where the blood rushes to the surface. Areas where the skin is thinner or where veins are more visible (forehead, wrists, fingers) contain subtle tints of green. Other tints, such as purple can be added to eyes to give impression of eye makeup or to hair, just to add variation. Stage 7: Colouring
